Counter Strike Source (officially abbreviated as CSS ) is a complete remake of Counter-Strike using the Source game engine. As in the original, Counter-Strike: Source pits a team of counter-terrorists against a team of terrorists in a series of rounds. Each round is won either by completing an objective (such as detonating a bomb or rescuing hostages) or by eliminating all members of the enemy team. Counter-Strike: Source is a remake of Counter-Strike, and retains its team-based objective-oriented first-person shooter style gameplay. The aim of playing a map is to accomplish a map's objective: defusing the bomb, rescuing all hostages, or killing the entire opposing team. The ultimate goal of the game is to win more rounds than the opposing team. Once players are killed, they do not respawn until the next round on most servers. This gameplay feature distinguishes Counter-Strike from other first-person shooter games, where players respawn instantly or after a short delay.
Shooting while moving dramatically decreases accuracy, and holding the trigger down to continuously shoot produces severe recoil. Shot damage depends upon where the bullet hits, with hits to the head often being lethal.

Quake III Arena (also known as Quake 3; abbreviated as Q3A or Q3), is a multiplayer-focused first-person shooter video game. The game was developed by id Software and featured music composed by Sonic Mayhem and Front Line Assembly. Quake III Arena is the third in the series and differs from previous games by excluding a traditional single-player element and focusing on multi-player action. The single-player is instead played against computer controlled bots in a similar style to Unreal Tournament.

Tactical Ops Assault on Terror is an online multiplayer video game with similar gameplay to Counter-Strike. Though it started as a mod for Unreal Tournament in December 1999, it soon became available as a retail version, which was released in April 2002 in the United States. The retail version is a standalone which does not require Unreal Tournament and contains additional maps not found in the free download.
The game was developed by Kamehan Studios, the last version being 3.4.0.
In 2004, fans of the game got permission from Atari to create a patch. This version (3.5.0) was released on March 16, 2005.
Tactical Ops is generally considered a combination of gameplay features of Counter-Strike and Unreal Tournament. Some praised Tactical Ops for its improved graphics, due mainly to the superiority of the Unreal engine over the aging Goldsrc engine used for Half-Life. Nonetheless, there was criticism that many maps were empty and undetailed. There were only three player models in the initial version, with skins being used to distinguish between different special forces and terrorists.

Global Operations is a first-person tactical shooter computer game developed by Barking Dog Studios and published by both Crave Entertainment and Electronic Arts. It was released in March 2002, following its public multiplayer beta version which contained only the Quebec map. The full game featured thirteen maps and featured both a single player and a multiplayer mode, which supported up to twenty-four players and three teams. Afterwards, a multiplayer demo with only the Antarctica map was released.
The game itself was focused on firearms in a special forces setting, with a mixture of military and counterterrorist type themes. The game featured a large number of firearms, numbering in the dozens and including a wide selection of handguns and rifles. Many of them could be further customized as well. For example, a C-mag and silencer could be added. The multi-player offered different classes (Reconnaissance, Commando, Medic, Heavy Weapons, Sniper, Demolitions and Intelligence Officer) with extra abilities and class-specific weapons. All classes could use all other classes' firearms (by picking them up off the battlefield), but each class might not have the same level of skill with a given weapon (such as less precision).
Other features existed as well, including a life-sign tracking device, as well other game items like tear gas grenades, smoke grenades and medkit. A LAW (Lightweight Anti-tank Weapon) could be used, as well as night vision and thermal vision.
Electronic Arts describes the game as: Enter the world of specialized warfare. Counter-Strike is a tactical first-person shooter video game developed by Valve Corporation which originated from a Half-Life modification by Minh "Gooseman" Le and Jess "Cliffe" Cliffe. By the fourth beta version, Valve Software, the developer who created Half-Life, began assisting in the development of Counter-Strike. The game was the most played Half-Life modification in terms of players, according to GameSpy in 2008.
Counter-Strike is a first-person shooter in which players join either the terrorist team, the counter-terrorist team, or become spectators. Each team attempts to complete their mission objective and/or eliminate the opposing team. Each round starts with the two teams spawning simultaneously.
A player can choose to play as one of eight different default character models (four for each side, although Counter-Strike: Condition Zero added two extra models, bringing the total to ten). Players are generally given a few seconds before the round begins (known as "freeze time") to prepare and buy equipment, during which they cannot attack or move (one notable exception is that a player may receive damage during freeze time. This happens when a map is changed to spawn players at a certain height above the ground, thus causing fall damage to the player. This is a method map designers use to alter the starting "HP" of players on a map). They can return to the buy area within a set amount of time to buy more equipment (some custom maps included neutral "buy zones" that could be used by both teams). Once the round has ended, surviving players retain their equipment for use in the next round; players who were killed begin the next round with the basic default starting equipment.
